Winter Wellness: Supporting Your Body's Natural Healing

Embrace the Season, Support Your Healing

I am writing this as I am snuggled under a blanket, typing on my
laptop. I am thankful for the sunshine today. But the bitter cold
that is rushing in this week is a reminder that...yes...it is January...
and it is winter.

So, how is wintertime treating you? Have you been well? Or have
you had some symptoms recently? Have you experienced
symptoms that medical personnel would diagnose as Influenza A,
or Covid, or other upper or lower respiratory infection? If you
answered, “Yes”, I can relate. Right before Christmas, I found
myself wiped out and truly under the weather. I knew I had to rest
and support my body to move through my symptoms without
suppressing them. Yes...read that again. And think about it...the
natural way to deal with symptoms is support and not
suppression.

What do I mean? Well, if someone has a cold and they take an
over-the-counter formula (ex: Advil Cold and Sinus) they may
initially feel better because those medications suppress the
uncomfortable symptoms, but they do not strengthen the body,
and they do not cure the virus, or bacterial, or fungal, or parasitic
infection you may have. In fact, if we engage in symptom
suppression, we can actually ‘drive’ the infection deeper into the
body. And at some point, it will return, and possibly express itself
in an even more virulent manner.

So what did I do when I became ill with a fever and cough, and
body aches? Well, I am sure you can imagine...I have quite the
natural health arsenal at my disposal. I am going to outline my
choices and share some of my favorites from my natural
medicine cabinet.

1. I had read about Fire Cider, but I had never had any
before, until Stephanie brought me some right before
Christmas. I love this tonic, and I used it to naturally
support my immune system while it was challenged. At
Westside Natural Health, we are fortunate to carry the locally made products from SCJ Wellness. And this year,
she has stocked us with her invigorating tonic: Fire Cider.

2. Calcium Lactate: I am a proud provider of Standard
Process supplements. And years ago, I learned that if
someone is suffering from body aches while they have
fever, it is an indication that the body may be leaching
calcium out of the bones to balance blood pH and help the
body fight infection. If they take calcium lactate, then the
calcium doesn’t have to come from the bones (and that’s
good) and the person may experience fever (which is also
a good thing for the body, and necessary to actually rid
the body of infections and imbalances) but it will burn
more efficiently and more effectively. I did have a fever for
about 36 hours, but I was not uncomfortable, as I was able
to get relief from my body aches as I supported my body
with calcium lactate tablets, plenty of fluids, including
mullein tea, and soup, and rest. Please don’t
underestimate the value of rest!

3. HP Virex: The herbal combination tincture from Country
Doctor Herbals of Cheyenne, WY, is exclusively available
in the Evansville area through my office. The group of
herbs in this tincture supports the body to improve
immune system function; with particular action on viral or
bacterial infections.

4. Boerike & Tafel homeopathic cough remedies. They have a
Daytime and Nighttime formulas. These formulas work
with your body to reduce symptom expression without
suppressing symptoms.

In the days and weeks ahead, I will be crafting my Natural
Medicine Cabinet class, and I will share this with you as soon as it
is available and actionable. You do not have to fear the
wintertime, and “cold and flu season” when you are prepared,
supporting your immune system, and, of course, eating real food.
And come on in to Westside Natural Health for your Natural
Medicine Cabinet supplies.

Stay Warm and Healthy!

BRAS Thermography

We are happy to announce that due to increased demand for their
imaging services, BRAS Thermography Louisville will be making more
frequent trips to Westside Natural Health to conduct their mobile
thermography imaging days.

At this time, we can share with you that the
first two thermography dates are January 31, 2025 and the next one will be
on March 21, 2025. As always, please contact BRAS Thermography Louisville
at (502) 895-1224 to schedule your imaging appointment.

Keep in mind that in addition to breast thermal imaging, they also conduct half-body and whole-body thermal images. This kind of imaging can really help you identify areas of inflammation in your body. This way you can see if your health and wellness protocols are producing the result of decreased inflammation by comparing images from year to year.

We are honored to have them visit us now up to six times a year and look forward to a springtime or summertime Lunch and Learn with Dr. Chip Gilmour as he teaches about the value of thermographic images in your overall wellness plan. Stay tuned for more information about the Lunch and Learn.
