We do hope you are enjoying the fall season. But we also want to share the following article about how some of the more well-known herbs can support your immune system so that the fall and winter are more pleasant times for you!

Your Herbal Allies for Cold and Flu Season…

October air has a way of reminding us that cold and flu season is right around the corner. Cold season often catches people off guard, before they have had a chance to support their immune system. The

good news is that nature has provided some remarkable plant allies that have been used for this very purpose for thousands of years. This month, I want to walk you through the basics, so you feel prepared and confident heading into the cooler months.

Why Your Immune System Needs Extra Support in Fall…

As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, several things shift in your body. You spend more time indoors. You get less sunlight, which means your body makes less vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a key role in supporting normal immune function. At the same time, cold, dry air can affect the mucous membranes in your nose and throat. Those membranes are your body's first line of defense. When they dry out, they do their job less effectively.

There is also a social factor. Cooler weather tends to bring people together in closed spaces, and that naturally increases exposure to whatever is circulating in your community. This is not a reason to worry. It is a reason to be thoughtful. Think of your immune system as a well-trained team. When the team is rested, well-fed, and supported, it performs at its best.

When it is run down from poor sleep, high stress, or a diet low in whole foods, even small challenges can feel harder to manage. The goal of everything we do in our practice is to help you keep that team strong and ready. Herbs are one of the tools that can help you do exactly that. They are not magic, but they are powerful when used wisely and consistently as part of a broader wellness plan.

Meet the Herbs That Have Stood the Test of Time…

Herbalism, the practice of using plants to support health, is not a trend. It is the foundation of most traditional medicine systems around the world. Many of the plants used centuries ago are still studied and respected today. A few stand out especially well for immune support during cold and flu season.

✨ Echinacea is probably the most recognized name in this category. It has been used by Native American communities for generations and is now one of the most widely researched herbs in the world. It is thought to support the activity of white blood cells, the cells your body uses to respond to threats. It works best when used at the right time and in the right form for our clients. That can mean tinctures or syrups for some, and capsules for others.

✨Elderberry is another favorite. The dark purple berries of the elder plant are rich in antioxidants, which are compounds that help protect your cells. Elderberry has been used in European herbal traditions for centuries, and it remains popular for good reason.

✨Astragalus is a root used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. It is known as an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body respond to stress more effectively. Stress is one of the biggest factors that can wear down immune defenses over time.

Each of these herbs has a story, and each works differently in the body. Knowing which one is right for you, and when to use it, matters.

How I Approach Immune Support in My Practice…

I want to be honest with you about something. There is no single herb, supplement, or strategy that works the same way for every person. Your immune health is shaped by your sleep, your stress levels, what you eat, how you move, and even your emotional state. That is why I never hand retail coustomers a bottle and send them on their way without addressing their questions and concerns.

For contracted clients of our practice, we look at the whole picture. Through tools like Nutrition Response Testing® and functional health consultations, I work with you to understand what your body actually needs. We look at foundational habits first, because herbs and supplements do their best work when the basics are solid. Think of it this way: planting a seed in dry, depleted soil will not give you much of a harvest. But plant that same seed in rich, well-nourished soil, and it thrives.

That analogy applies directly to immune support. Herbs like echinacea, elderberry, and astragalus can be meaningful additions to a solid wellness plan. But they support a body that is already being cared for well. When we work together, I help you build that foundation first and then layer in the tools, including herbal support, that make the most sense for you.

At our retail store here in Evansville, we carry only professional-grade products that I trust. Quality matters enormously with herbs. Not all products on the market are created equal, and I want you to have access to the best.

Warmly,
Laurel Hart, ND
