Westside Natural Health - Happy May🌷Hormone Health

Ladies, if you've ever felt like your body is working against you — the mood swings, the exhaustion, the bloating that shows up like clockwork — I want you to know that your body isn't broken. It's communicating. Female hormonal health is one of the areas I care most deeply about in my practice, because I see how profoundly it shapes the way women feel in their daily lives, and how often those signals go misunderstood or dismissed. This month, I want to start a conversation that I believe every woman deserves to have.

Sincerely,

Laurel Hart, ND

What "Hormone Balance" Actually Means

Hormones are chemical messengers — tiny molecules produced by glands throughout your body that travel through your bloodstream and give instructions to virtually every organ and system you have. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, thyroid hormones, and insulin are just a few of the key players in a woman's hormonal landscape. They don't work in isolation. They work in conversation with one another, constantly adjusting and responding to what's happening inside and around you.

Here's an analogy I love to share with my patients: think of your hormones like a symphony orchestra. Each instrument has its own role, its own timing, its own sound. When every section plays in tune and on cue, the result is beautiful music. But if even one section is off — say, the strings are too loud, or the percussion comes in at the wrong moment — the whole performance is affected.

That's what hormonal imbalance feels like from the inside. It's not just one thing going wrong. It's a ripple effect. And the symptoms women often experience — irregular cycles, intense PMS, fatigue, sleep disruption, weight shifts, mood changes — are the orchestra's way of telling you that something needs attention.

Understanding this matters because it means there's rarely one single fix. Real, lasting hormonal support comes from looking at the whole picture: nutrition, stress, sleep, environment, movement, and more.

Why Your Cycle Is One of Your Greatest Health Indicators

For decades, the menstrual cycle was treated as little more than a monthly inconvenience. But the truth is, your cycle is one of the most detailed health reports your body produces — every single month. Functional medicine practitioners and naturopathic doctors have long recognized what researchers are now confirming: the menstrual cycle can reflect the state of your overall health in ways that few other biomarkers can.

A healthy cycle typically spans somewhere between 25 and 35 days, with ovulation occurring in the middle phase. Each phase — the follicular phase, ovulation, the luteal phase, and menstruation — has its own hormonal signature and its own set of physical and emotional experiences. When those phases shift or feel extreme, it's often a sign that something upstream in the body is asking for support.

I think of the menstrual cycle like a monthly report card. The grade you see at the end tells you something, but what's really important is understanding what happened throughout the term that led to that result. Was there too much stress? Was nutrition lacking? Was sleep inconsistent? Were environmental factors creating interference?

For our clients here in Evansville, I find that when we start paying respectful attention to what the cycle is doing — tracking it, honoring it, and investigating its patterns — we gain incredibly useful information. It becomes less of something happening to you and more of a resource working with you.

Where Foundational Health Fits Into the Hormonal Picture

One of the most important things I teach my patients is that hormonal health doesn't exist in a vacuum. It is built — or undermined — by the foundational choices we make every day. What you eat, how much quality water you drink, how consistently you move your body, how well you sleep, and even how much unresolved emotional stress you're carrying all have a measurable influence on how your hormones behave.

This is why at Westside Natural Health, we always start with the foundations of health. Before we dive into specific hormonal support strategies, we look at nutrition first. Whole, real foods provide the raw materials your body uses to actually produce hormones. Healthy fats, quality proteins, and a wide range of plant-based nutrients are not optional extras — they are the building blocks. Without them, your body is essentially trying to run a factory with missing parts.

Your Plate Is Your Most Powerful Hormone Tool

Let’s go back to the ‘hormone balance as a symphony orchestra’ analogy. Every instrument needs to be in tune, but the conductor — your blood sugar — sets the tempo for everything else. When blood sugar swings wildly throughout the day, the whole hormonal concert falls apart. This is why what you eat, and *when* you eat it, matters so much for cycle balance and overall hormonal rhythm.

This week, I'd love for you to try one specific shift: start every meal with protein and healthy fat *before* the carbohydrates on your plate. This simple sequencing approach may help support more stable blood sugar throughout the day, which in turn supports your body's ability to produce and regulate key hormones naturally.

Some nourishing foods worth prioritizing right now include pasture-raised eggs, wild-caught salmon, avocado, flaxseeds, leafy greens like kale and spinach, and colorful vegetables rich in fiber. These whole foods provide foundational building blocks — healthy fats, B vitamins, zinc, magnesium, and fiber — that your body genuinely needs for healthy hormonal function.

And please, don't fear fat. Your hormones are literally made from fat and cholesterol. Cutting healthy fats out of your diet is one of the most common nutritional mistakes I see affecting hormonal balance in my practice. Nourish yourself fully — your body is worth it.

Two Lifestyle Habits That Quietly Change Everything

If I could hand every woman two free tools for hormonal support, they would be quality sleep and intentional daily movement. I know you've heard this before — but stay with me, because the *how* matters just as much as the *what*.

Sleep isn't just rest. During deep sleep, your body performs critical hormonal housekeeping — balancing cortisol, supporting progesterone production, and regulating the hunger hormones leptin and ghrelin. Think of sleep as your nightly hormonal reset button. When we shortchange it, everything downstream gets disrupted. This week, try setting a consistent bedtime — even just 30 minutes earlier than usual — and dimming screens and overhead lights after 8 p.m. to support your natural melatonin rhythm.

For movement, more is not always better when it comes to hormones. Intense daily exercise without adequate recovery can actually stress your adrenal glands and disrupt the delicate HPA axis — the communication highway between your brain and your hormones. Instead, this week I'd encourage you to explore a mix: a 20–30 minute walk outdoors, some gentle yoga or stretching, and maybe one or two strength sessions. Walking outside has the added bonus of grounding you to the earth — something we offer here at Westside Natural Health through our grounding sessions — and natural light exposure helps regulate your circadian rhythm beautifully. Small, consistent choices compound over time. You don't have to do everything perfectly — you just have to keep showing up for yourself.

Supporting Your Body from the Inside Out — Naturally

Here are a few natural supportive tools we work with regularly here at Westside Natural Health — because sometimes food and lifestyle alone benefit from a little extra reinforcement, especially if your body has been under stress for a long time.

Whole food nutritional supplements — meaning supplements made from concentrated real foods rather than isolated synthetic vitamins — can provide targeted nutritional support for hormonal pathways. In our practice, we use muscle testing techniques (Nutrition Response Testing® and Nutritional Kinesiology) to help identify what your body is asking for, rather than guessing. This personalized approach is one of our favorite things to offer, because no two women's hormonal journeys are identical.

We also work with Bach Flower Remedies for emotional patterns that often run alongside hormonal shifts — think irritability, anxiety, or feeling emotionally raw around your cycle. And our professional-grade essential oils can be a wonderful complement to a supportive daily routine. There's something grounding and genuinely calming about using a simple, pure oil as part of your morning or evening rhythm. Speaking of grounding, we are pleased to share that Dara is now offering Grounding Sessions with the use of her new PEMF machine the Tera P90+.

Key Takeaway:
If you've been curious about any of these tools but weren't sure where to start, our retail store in Evansville carries carefully curated, professional-grade products I personally stand behind. You're always welcome to stop in with questions. My team and I genuinely love helping you find what fits *your* body and *your* life — not a one-size-fits-all answer.
