How to Support Your Immune System through the Holidays
Published about 1 month ago • 4 min read
You may have seen the “memes” with the following phrases: We are not entering cold and flu season, but we are entering a time where there's a candy holiday (Halloween), followed by a pie holiday (Thanksgiving), followed by a cookie holiday(Christmas) followed by increased alcohol consumption at the new year (New Year’s Eve). And we call it cold and flu season. What do all these holidays and special times have in common? People tend to celebrate with fabulous treats that contain an exorbitant amount of sugar. And not just not just actual sugar, the granulated kind, but breads, pastries, pie crusts, and anything made with flour also turns quickly to sugar in our digestive tracts, and can destabilize glucose processing, and increase insulin resistance. Besides the damage sugar can do to one’s metabolism, it is very damaging to overall immune function. Pair increased sugar consumption with decreased sunlight, increased time on the couch watching football (or Hallmark Channel Christmas movies), and colder temperatures that bring on the closing of windows and the use of indoor heating, and you have a recipe for increased toxicity in the body and the way you can see that play out is through the expression of symptoms. Your body is struggling to handle challenges that are related to immune and/or environmental toxins, and you “get sick.” What can be done about this ahead of time, so you don’t get sick? Here are some of the routine actions I take in order to support my immune system:
1. LIMIT SUGAR, LIMIT SUGAR, LIMIT SUGAR!!!
Trust me, you can still enjoy your get-togethers without eating the entire slice of Aunt Mary’s famous Pumpkin Pie!
2. Go Outside
Get outside and move as often as possible. Even if it is playing with the dog. I get outside, breathe fresh air and often walk barefoot on the grass to “ground” myself.
3. Sleep
I get to sleep at a decent hour. Rest is everything.
4. Drink Lots of Water
I drink at least ½ my body weight in ounces of clean water daily.
5. Take Some Featured Products
If I have experienced a lot of stress, or am working a lot of hours, I will also add some of the Featured Products (see photos below) to my routine to support my immune system. I am partial to the Fire Cider as it is an invigorating tonic that fortifies me for the challenges of the day and the season.
6. Eat Seasonal Veggies & Lean Protein
I emphasize seasonal veggies and lean proteins for much of my diet. Processed foods are killing us! They are full of added sugars and seed oils-both of which are inflammatory and make all your systems struggle to work properly. There are numerous fruits and vegetables in-season right now. Some of my favorites in the fruit category are apples, pears, cranberries, pomegranates, grapes, plums, and oranges. These are packed full of vitamins and antioxidants. My favorite in-season veggies include pumpkin, butternut squash, cauliflower, beets, carrots, and leafy greens (such as spinach and kale).
As we enter this sugar season, remember to take these important steps to help keep your immune system strong.

BRAS Thermography
Our next mobile Thermography screening will be held on November 14th, 2025. As always, please contact BRAS Thermography Louisville at (502) 895-1224 to schedule your imaging appointment.
Keep in mind that in addition to breast thermal imaging, they also conduct half-body and whole-body thermal images. This kind of imaging can really help you identify areas of inflammation in your body.
